jumperkid: (All things must pass- chaos_pockets)
Almost a month ago exactly now my grandfather passed away.  I don't really want to talk about it, so I've disabled comments. But it feels a bit odd somehow to not at least acknowledge to my friends that something has happened.  Despite being comparatively large, my family is very close. When I was little, we would generally spend weeks at time at my grandparents' house during the summer vacation and Jim would often take my sister and I to the post office or to his office. And when we did "gymnatstics" in the den he would ALWAYS applaud at the appropriate moments. As an aside. Yeah, we all call him Jim, which is his name. For whatever reason, the very idea of calling that man "Grandfather" or "Grandaddy" or any other permutation thereof is just absurd. It just doesn't work.

It kills me that I can't be down in Alabama more at the moment. My big brother is the bestest big brother in the entire world and he helped me get my last minute plane ticket to go to the funeral.  But I wanted to stay much longer than I was able to. I am so very grateful that a few years ago my grandparents were able to move into the apartment building that houses four of my other relatives, so I know that Emmy is not alone. (This by the way is not an exaggeration. I'm not really sure why, but people keep moving there. My grandmother, aunt, second cousin and two of my great aunts all live in this one building. It is totally awesome because we've all just decided that we basically own the whole place now and will wander from apartment to apartment barefoot and in pajamas. It's like the biggest sleepover ever.)

So, there's that. I think now, I am going to go read some fic. We'll be returning the LJ to your regularly scheduled squeeing and flailing shortly.
