Braggin' on the HS
Oct. 3rd, 2005 01:19 pmSo I meant to do this a while ago, but as it is Gay Pride (or is it Gay History?) Month, I will do it now. I would like to take a moment to brag on the high school my sister teaches at. They are a Southern, rural, decidedly conservative Christian county and the high school reflects this. However, this year a group of students decided they wanted to form a Gay Straight Allaince. A place for gay students to feel welcome and straight students to show their support. Somewhat surprisingly, the administration and the School Board both supported the students and allowed the club with no problems. Now, we all know that legally they had to, but the point is, they didn't try to worm out of it. When some parents tried to raise a rukus over the club, the principal said, "Look. Your chioce is have this club, or loose ALL the clubs." He just basically ignored the parents. When the sign-up day rolled around 66 students joined the GSA. Only one parent requested that their child be removed. Other than one School Board meeting that some parents attended, there were no other protests.
